Sharston is about eight miles south of the city centre. It is south of the M56, north of Hollyhedge Road and east of Brownley Road. Nearby Princess Parkway is a major route into the city. Living in Sharston
Most homes in Benchill Green are rented from Willow Park Housing Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that took over the housing from the city council in 1999. Willow Park has made big improvements to all local homes, the facilities and the environment.
There are local shops close by on Hollyhedge Road and Brownley Road. Wythenshawe health centre is on Brownley Road too. People in the northern part of the area are within a mile of the shops and facilities in Northenden village. And most homes in Benchill are a similar distance from the recently-improved Wythenshawe civic shopping centre, with its food hall and market. The centre also includes the Wythenshawe Forum, a modern, welcoming, safe and accessible building at the heart of community life; the place to come for leisure, learning and childcare. It includes a swimming pool, gym, sports hall and fitness centre, health centre, children's nursery and job centre. The modern Forum library has all the latest facilities to give local people instant access to employment and learning opportunities.
There are regular buses to the city centre. Gatley train station, with regular trains to the city centre is just over a mile away. There are job opportunities at nearby Sharston industrial area, and the expanding Manchester airport (about three miles).
All homes are close to Hollyhedge park where there are football pitches, a bowling club, nature area and children’s play park. There are summer play sessions and an annual community open day there too.It’s about a mile and a half to a Wythenshawe park - one of the biggest and best in the city! There's a horticultural centre, pets corner, crazy golf, horse riding, bowling greens, pitch and putt, tennis courts an athletics track, football pitches and much more.
The community centre on Benchill Road in neighbouring Benchill is a base for various groups and activities including learning courses, employment advice, an out of school club, and playschemes.
Learning in Sharston
Younger children go to Crossacres primary school on Crossacres Road, Benchill primary school on Benchill Road, or to St John Fisher Catholic school on Woodhouse Lane in nearby Brownley Green. Most homes are just over a mile from Parklands High secondary school next to Wythenshawe civic centre, or St Paul’s Catholic school, over the motorway (by footbridge) in Newall Green.
