Welcome to St Georges

St George's is a small estate, less than a mile south of the city centre. It lies between Chester Road, Stretford Road, and Chorlton Road in Hulme - close to Manchester's border with Trafford. Chester Road is a major route from the city centre out to the motorway network around Manchester. See detailed map

Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area transferred to a new not-for-profit landlord, City South Manchester Housing Trust, in June 2008. City South Manchester is making massive improvements to every home and the local environment.

Living in St George's

St George's is right next to the massive transformation that has created a 'new' Hulme in the last few years. But it has retained its own traditional identity. It's about three-quarters of a mile to the Asda superstore on Princess Road, and to the nearby new Hulme market with its interesting selection of food and craft stalls. The local shops, post office and library along Stretford Road are even nearer. And the vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is within walking distance, or just a few minutes journey on one of the regular buses through the area. As well as easy access to the city centre, St George's is well placed for local employment like the two breweries in Moss Side, the Manchester Science park and Greenheys business centre, as well as the Trafford Park industrial centre and the businesses and entertainment venues at Salford Quays.

The rejuvenated Castlefield area, with its bars, cafes, museum and leisure facilities is just a ten minute walk away. It's about a mile to Moss Side leisure centre, with swimming pools, sports halls, squash courts, fitness centre and sauna. The extensively-refurbished Zion arts centre on Stretford Road (half a mile) has music and dance studios, recording facilities and is a venue for a range of performers. St George's has its own local park, with football pitches, on City Road. Nearby Leroy James park, on Royce Road, has a playground and multiplay, and there's an adventure playground for children close by on Jackson Crescent. Proctors junior youth club is about half a mile away on Hulme Street, near the Princess Road junction with the Mancunian Way. See detailed map
