Rusholme West is less than two miles south of the city centre. It is based just south of Moss Lane East, halfway between Princess Road and Wilmslow Road - two major routes between the city centre and south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. See detailed map
Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area will transfer to a local not-for-profit landlord, Eastlands Homes, by the end of 2008. Eastlands will make massive improvements to every home and the local environment.
Living in Rusholme West
Rusholme West is handy for a wide range of facilities. There are small supermarkets and local shops all along Wilmslow Road, and a large, modern Asda less than a mile away in Hulme. The new Hulme market, just next to Asda has a variety of interesting food and craft stalls. Wilmslow Road (half a mile away) is famous for its busy Asian restaurants, shops and cafes. Princess Road (also half a mile) has been radically improved recently, with a range of small local shops. Local employers like the two breweries in Moss Side, and firms at nearby Manchester Science park and Greenheys business centre are committed to employing local people.
The site of the former Manchester City football ground will soon be home to a new `urban village' of around 300 high-quality houses, and new community facilities including a modern health centre. There'll be a wide range of property types - from large family houses to flats for older people - to give local people new local housing choices, and to attract new residents to the area.
There are regular buses along Wilmslow Road to Manchester and the suburban centres of Withington and Didsbury, and on Princess Road to the city and out to the airport. The vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is just a few minutes journey. The Millennium Powerhouse building, on Raby Street (just off Princess Road) is a new purpose-built social, recreational, sporting and education facility for local youngsters. It's just over a mile to the brand new Manchester Aquatics centre - where there's a variety of swimming pools and other leisure facilities. The Manchester City training centre, about half a mile away on Platt Lane, has indoor and outdoor football pitches and other modern sports and gym facilities that can be booked by the public.
The local park on Great Western Street has a playground and multi-court play area, and it's a short walk to Whitworth park and art gallery - opposite St Mary's hospital and the Manchester Royal Infirmary on Wilmslow Road. Platt Fields Park (half a mile) has a boating lake, angling, four bowling greens, football pitch, crazy golf, and tennis courts. It's also home to the historic Platt Hall, Manchester's costume museum, and formal gardens and orchard. The park hosts the annual Manchester garden show in August. The nearest local library is on Platt Lane in neighbouring Fallowfield. Learning in Rusholme West
The local primary schools are: Webster primary on Denmark Road; Holy Name Catholic school on Denmark Road; Heald Place school (close to Whitworth Park); Wilbraham school on Platt Lane; and St Edwards Catholic school on Yew Tree Road. There are three secondary schools within a mile: Ducie High school on Lloyd Street North, Trinity High on Cambridge Street and Whalley Range High on Wilbraham Road.

Housing in Rusholme West
The wider Fallowfield and Rusholme areas have a healthy mix of housing - with good proportions of owner-occupied homes and council housing. There's a lot of private renting and student accommodation too. There are about 260 council homes here - 160 of them are houses (mostly two- or three- bedroom with a few larger homes).
