Welcome to Platt Fields

Platt Fields is less than two miles south of the city centre. It includes two multi-storey blocks, and a very small estate based around the junction of Dickenson Road and Wilmslow Road on the border between Rusholme and Fallowfield. Homes are only available to people over 50 years old. Wilmslow Road is a major route from the city centre to south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. See detailed map

Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area will transfer to a local not-for-profit landlord, Eastlands Homes, in 2009. Eastlands will make massive improvements to every home and the local environment.

Living in Platt Fields

Platt Fields is handy for a wide range of facilities. There are small supermarkets and local shops all along Wilmslow Road, and a large, modern Sainsburys less than a mile away in Fallowfield. Wilmslow Road is famous for its Asian restaurants, shops and cafes. Public transport is excellent, with regular buses along Wilmslow Road to Manchester and the suburban centres of Withington and Didsbury - the vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is just a few minutes journey.

The site of the former Manchester City football ground will soon be home to a new `urban village' of around 300 high-quality houses, and new community facilities including a modern health centre. There'll be a wide range of property types - from large family houses to flats for older people - to give local people new local housing choices, and to attract new residents to the area.

It's a mile and a half to the brand new Manchester Aquatics centre - where there is a variety of pools and other leisure facilities. Ardwick leisure centre, with its indoor bowling and keep fit sessions, is a similar distance. St Mary's hospital and the Manchester Royal Infirmary are about three-quarters of a mile down Wilmslow Road. Platt Fields Park is just across the road. This large green area has a boating lake, angling, four bowling greens, football pitch, crazy golf, and tennis courts. It's also home to the historic Platt Hall, Manchester's costume museum, and formal gardens and orchard. The park hosts the annual Manchester garden show in August. Birchfields Park (Birchfields Road) with its wide open spaces and playground is very close too. Whitworth art gallery is opposite the hospitals on Wilmslow Road, and Manchester museum and the university are just a little further. See detailed map

Housing in Platt Fields

The wider Fallowfield and Rusholme areas have a healthy mix of housing - with good proportions of owner-occupied homes and council housing. There's a lot of private renting too. There are 125 flats in two multi-storey blocks in Platt Fields, and 50 other flats in small blocks. It's a very popular area, with plenty of demand for all homes. See detailed map
