Welcome to Newton Heath

Newton Heath is about three miles north-east of the city centre. It is on the south side of Oldham Road, from Ten Acre Lane at the city centre end, to the border with Oldham borough, just past Droyslden Road. Oldham Road is a major route into Manchester from Lancashire, so transport links are excellent. See detailed map

Living in Newton Heath

Most homes are within walking distance of Oldham Road (although it's three quarters of a mile for people living in the southern edge of the area). Oldham Road has a variety of shops, supermarkets and a local precinct. Other good shops are just a short bus ride away in Failsworth, and there are frequent buses down Oldham Road to the vibrant city centre, with its shopping, leisure and entertainment. There is a train station at Dean Lane (just over Oldham Road) with regular trains to Manchester and Oldham. This could be converted for Metrolink trams to give a faster, more frequent service.

The north-western corner of the area (around the Oldham Road/Ten Acre Lane junction) is only half a mile from the new Central Manchester Business park - an exciting venture that is boosting the local economy and offering many new jobs. And it's only a mile from the centre of Newton Heath to the City of Manchester stadium and other sporting and recreational facilities in Eastlands.

Brookdale Park, on Droylsden Road, is a large area of open space, with bowls, a playcentre and football pitches. There are more pitches (Astroturf) at Ten Acre Lane. There are smaller local play areas at Scotland Hall Road in the south of Newton Heath, and Gaskell Street nearer Oldham Road. There's a library on Old Church Street with all the usual facilities including Internet access and video and CD loans. Ravensbury community swimming pool on Alpine Street in Clayton is within half a mile of homes in the south west corner of Newton Heath. The leisure centre, on Varley Street in neighbouring Miles Platting, has swimming pools and a fitness room. Newton Heath youth and community centre offers information and advice sessions and a wide range of activities like keep fit, aerobics and bingo. Its children's and youth clubs are open to all local youngsters over four. It runs an after school club and several football teams. . See detailed map

Learning in Newton Heath

There are four primary schools in Newton Heath: Christ the King Catholic school (Culcheth Lane), and All Saints CofE school (Culcheth Lane) are both in the middle of the area, while Briscoe Lane school (Briscoe Lane) serves the western half of Newton Heath. St Wilfreds CofE school is on Mabel Street. There are no secondary schools in Newton Heath itself, so older children usually go to North Manchester Community school for girls (on Brookside Rd, Moston) or North Manchester High for boys (Charlestown Road, Moston) - both about two miles away.

Facilities for pre-school children include a day nursery on Windsor Road (at Clayton Bridge in the south-east corner of the area), an adult and toddler group on Hallam Road in the west of the area (towards Ten Acre Lane) and playgroups at St Wilfred's school and Brookdale Park.
