Welcome to New Moston

New Moston is about five miles from the city centre in the north east corner of Manchester. It is based around Hollinwood Avenue and its junctions with Lighbowne Road and Broadway - major routes from the north to the city centre. The M60 motorway around Manchester is not too far away, giving easy access to other parts of the city and the north west. See detailed map

Living in New Moston

There is a large Morrisons supermarket on Hollinwood Avenue,and local shops and services like health centres, post offices, banks and building socities within easy reach on Moston Lane East, Hollinwood Avenue, Lightbowne Road and Moston Lane. There's good public transport, with frequent buses along Lightbowne Road and Broadway to the city centre and Oldham, and along Victoria Avenue to Middleton. There are regular trains to the city and Rochdale from Moston station.

Broadhurst Park at the southern end of the area is one of Manchester's largest parks - with bowls, football pitches, a playcentre, tennis, and cycle-speedway. There's a playground and kickabout area at Nuthurst park, and a playground at Anfield Road. Broadway Pools on Broadway has two swimming pools, a sauna and steam room, sunbeds and a fitness suite. New Moston library on Nuthurst Road has Internet access and video and CD loans. See detailed map

Learning in New Moston

There are three local primary schools - New Moston junior school on Moston Lane East, St Mary's C of E school on St. Mary's Road, and St Margaret Mary's Catholic school on St Margaret's Road across Hollinwood Avenue. Older boys can go to North Manchester High school for boys on Charlestown Road, and girls to North Manchester Community school for girls on Brookside Road (both within walking distance). There is a Catholic secondary school, St Matthews, on Nuthurst Road in the middle of the area.

The new city learning centre at St Matthews school is a fantastic resource for local people - it boasts the very latest technology and is equipped with 120 state-of -the art computers. Facilities include fast internet access, video conferencing and video editing. It offers a range of courses - from beginners to advanced. Housing in New Moston

More than half of the homes in New Moston are privately owned. Council housing, making up a third of the area, is mostly in the north near Moston train station. All council homes are managed by Northwards Housing. There are about 1,330 council homes here - more than 900 of them are houses. There are over 200 flats in small blocks plus flats in two multi-storey blocks. There are maisonettes and bungalows too. It's generally a settled, residential area. See detailed map

Northwards Housing has a £130 million improvement plan that will bring all homes, and local environments, up to decent modern standards by 2010. Every Northwards home will benefit from some of this work by 2008.
