Living in Moss Side
Moss Side is right next door to the modern facilities that have sprung up since the massive regeneration of neighbouring Hulme. The Asda superstore on Princess Road offers quality shopping at convenient opening times. The nearby new Hulme market has an interesting selection of food and craft stalls, and Princess Road itself has been radically improved recently, with a range of local shops and small industrial units. These developments have boosted local employment opportunities. Local employers like the two breweries, and firms at Manchester Science park and Greenheys business centre are committed to employing local people. A new commercial park at Birley Fields in Hulme is bringing more local jobs in easy reach.
The site of the former Manchester City football ground will soon be home to a new `urban village' of around 300 high-quality houses, and new community facilities including a modern health centre. There'll be a wide range of property types - from large family houses to flats for older people - to give local people new local housing choices, and to attract new residents to the area.
There are regular buses along Princess Road to the city and out to the airport. The vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is just a few minutes journey. There are frequent buses to the bars, restaurants and local shops in nearby Chorlton too. It's just a mile to the university and major hospitals on Wilmslow Road. Moss Side has its own leisure centre, with swimming pools, sports halls, squash courts, fitness centre and sauna. Alexandra Park offers greenery and space, with its tree-lined walks, lake with fishing as well as sports pitches and courts. The park holds summer family fun days and hosts an annual International Caribbean Festival. There's an excellent adventure playground on Whitnall Close (off Claremont Road) and a playground and kickabout area on Plainsfield Close.
The Millennium Powerhouse building, on Raby Street (just over Princess Road) is a new purpose-built social, recreational, sporting and education facility for local youngsters. There's a large family health centre in the middle of the area. (See Rusholme West for local facilities closest to homes on the east side of Princess Road). See detailed map
