Welcome to Longsight
 

Longsight is on Stockport Road, less than three miles south of the city centre. Most council homes are west of Stockport Road on the 'Anson' estate: between Birchfields Road in the west, Dickenson Road in the north and Old Hall Lane in the south. There are more home east of Stockport Road - mostly around Stanley Grove, with a few more near Crowcroft Park. Stockport Road (the A6) is a major route from the city centre to south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. See detailed map

Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area will transfer to a local not-for-profit landlord, Eastlands Homes, by the end of 2008. Eastlands will make massive improvements to every home and the local environment.

Living in Longsight

There is a large Asda Supermarket and smaller shops at Longsight district centre on Stockport Road. Longsight market (open four days a week) on Dickenson Road is a busy traditional market with a wide range of quality products. You can find a variety of eating places there too - including vegetarian and Caribbean cafes.There's a variety of interesting shops including an 'antiques hypermarket' , and the famous 'That Cafe' restaurant in neighbouring Levenshulme. It's about three-quarters of a mile to the busy Asian restaurants, shops and cafes along Wilmslow Road in Rusholme.

Nearby Ardwick leisure centre has indoor bowling, karate, keep fit and five-a-side football. Levenshulme Pools, just down Stockport Road offers two swimming pools, a gym, weights room, sauna and sunbeds. The area has had a major boost with the refurbishment of Belle Vue leisure centre (half a mile east of Stockport Road). Homes east of Stockport Road are within easy reach of Crowcroft Park (Stockport Road) with its bowls, kickabout area, basketball, skateboard/rollerblade track, and playground. The Anson estate is close to Birchfields Park (Birchfields Road) with its wide open spaces, playground, and basketball courts. Homes on the east side of Stockport Road are not far from the multiplex cinema, bowling centre, and greyhound track at Belle Vue.

Public transport is excellent, with regular buses along Stockport Road and Birchfields Road - the vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is a few minutes journey. Levenshulme train station, on the busy Manchester to Stockport line, is less than half a mile from homes in the south of the area. There's a health centre and a library (with internet access, videos and CDs) near the district centre on Stockport Road. See detailed map

Learning in Longsight

The Anson estate, west of Stockport Road, has two local primary schools - St Agnes CofE school on Clitheroe Road, and St Robert's Catholic school on Montgomery Road. Children on the other side of Stockport Road can go to Stanley Grove community school (on Stanley Grove), or St Richard's Catholic school on Wilpshire Avenue (half a mile away). There are no secondary schools in Longsight itself. The nearest are all about a mile from the Anson estate - Cedar Mount (on Matthews Lane on the Levenshulme/Gorton border), St Peters Catholic school (Holmecroft Road, Gorton), or Levenshulme High (on Crossley Road, Levenshulme).

Facilities for pre-school children include a children's centre, playgroup, and adult and toddler group at Slade Lane (close to the Anson estate) and an adult and toddler group at Stanley Grove school, east of Stockport Road. There is a junior youth club for eight to twelve year olds at Longsight youth club, Stockport Road.

Housing in Longsight

Longsight has a good mix of housing. Nearly 40 percent is owner-occupied. One quarter of homes are rented from the council, and the same number are rented privately. Another 10 percent are rented from housing associations. Some of the area's older terraced houses have been knocked down to make way for new larger homes to improve housing choice and create a better environment. There are about 500 homes rented from the council. More than half are two- or three-bedroom houses. The rest are mostly flats in small blocks, plus a handful of bungalows.
