Living in Harpurhey South
Most of the area is within half a mile of the new North City Centre
complex. As well as a variety of smaller shops and indoor market, there's
a large Asda store and a unique covered outdoor market. There's a post
office and medical centre too. Not only is it the place to come for
a whole range of shops, but it has special Sure Start facilities for
families with young children. It has a new leisure and fitness centre,
with a modern swimming pool, fitness suite and dance studio. A new police
station is helping build a safe and secure atmosphere.
There are frequent buses into Manchester and up to Middleton and Rochdale.
The vibrant city centre, with its shops, entertainment and leisure facilities
is just a few minutes journey. The estate on the east side of Rochdale
Road benefits from its own local bus route, although people living west
of Queens Park (in Hendham Vale) have to get to Rochdale Road.
Harpurhey is close to the new Central Manchester Business park (off
Monsall Road) - an exciting venture that’s boosting the local economy
and offering new jobs and training opportunities.
Learning in Harpurhey South
Young children living on the west side of Rochdale Road can go to Harpur Mount primary school on Alfred Street, while the other side of Rochdale Road is served by Burgess primary or St Edmunds Catholic school (both on Monsall Road). But there are no secondary schools in the area. Most children either go to North Manchester High school for boys on Charlestown Road, Charlestown, or Manchester Community school for girls on Brookside Road in neighbouring Moston.

The south-east corner of the area (opposite Queens park) has good facilities for pre-school children with: adult and toddler groups on Carisbrook Street, Monsall Road, and Water Street; and a children's centre and play centre also on Carisbrook Street. There's a playgroup on Vernon Street too. There's a day nursery at Joseph Lister House on Rochdale Road.

Housing in Harpurhey South
There are about 740 council homes here - all managed by Northwards Housing. There are 370 two- or three- bedroom houses, plus another fifty that have four or more rooms. There are 160 flats in small blocks, 50 flats in a multi-storey block, and another 100 maisonettes. See detailed map
Northwards Housing has a £130 million improvement plan that will bring all homes, and local environments, up to decent modern standards by 2010. Every Northwards home will benefit from some of this work by 2008.
