Welcome to Gorton South

Gorton South is three miles south-east of the city centre. It lies either side of Mount Road - from its junction with Hyde Road at Belle Vue, to where it meets Matthews Lane in Levenshulme. See detailed map

Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area will transfer to a local not-for-profit landlord, Eastlands Homes, by the end of 2008. Eastlands will make massive improvements to every home and the local environment.

Living in Gorton South

There are one or two local shops, a post office, and a council neighbourhood centre on Mount Road, but there is no major shopping centre in Gorton South itself. Homes on the west side of Mount Road are about three-quarters of a mile from a large Asda Supermarket and shops at Longsight district centre on Stockport Road. The northern part of the area is about half a mile from the food hall and outdoor market on Garratt Way just off Hyde Road. And they are just round the corner from the multiplex cinema, bowling centre, and greyhound track at Belle Vue.

The recently refurbished Belle Vue leisure centre (on Pink Bank Lane) has two large sports halls, cricket lanes, two hockey pitches, running track and more. Debdale park and outdoor centre is about a mile from the middle of Gorton South. It's one of Manchester's biggest and best parks, with facilities for tennis, pitch and putt, bowling, five-a-side football, netball, boating, fishing, orienteering and more. Melland sports fields at the southern end of Mount Road has a running track and indoor sports hall, and there are football pitches on Annie Lee playing fields on Mount Road. Homes in the south-west corner of the area are close to Crowcroft Park in Longsight where there is a playground, bowls, kickabout area, basketball, and skateboard/rollerblade track.

There are libraries on Garratt Way over Hyde Road and near the Longsight district centre. There are regular buses along Mount Road to the major routes into the city centre and to Stockport. There are two local train stations - Belle Vue and Ryder Brow - with hourly trains to Manchester. See detailed map
