Welcome to Fallowfield

Fallowfield is two miles south of the city centre. It is on the east side of Princess Road, based around its junction with Wilbraham Road. Princess Road is major route between the city centre and the motorway network to south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. See detailed map.

Following a vote by local people, council housing in this area transferred to a new not-for-profit landlord, City South Manchester Housing Trust, in June 2008. City South Manchester is making massive improvements to every home and the local environment.

Living in Fallowfield

Fallowfield is well-placed for a range of nearby facilities. There are small local shops and a library on Platt Lane in the middle of the area. Homes in the south east of Fallowfield are just over half a mile from a large modern Sainbury's on Wilmslow Road, while the north-west side is less than a mile from the Asda superstore in Hulme. The Hulme market, just next to Asda, has a variety of interesting food and craft stalls. Wilmslow Road (less than a mile from the centre of Fallowfield) is famous for its busy Asian restaurants, shops and cafes. Princess Road has been radically improved, with a range of small local shops.

The site of the former Manchester City football ground will soon be home to a new `urban village' of around 300 high-quality houses, and new community facilities including a modern health centre. There'll be a wide range of property types - from large family houses to flats for older people - to give local people new local housing choices, and to attract new residents to the area.

There are regular buses along Princess Road to the city and out to the airport. The vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is just a few minutes journey. Buses along Wilbraham Road run to the bars, restaurants and facilities of nearby Chorlton, while Withington village, with more shops and entertainment is about a mile away.

The Manchester City training centre, on Platt Lane, has indoor and outdoor football pitches and other modern sports and gym facilities that can be booked by the public. It's about a mile to Moss Side leisure centre, where there are swimming pools, sports halls, squash courts, fitness centre and sauna. Its a little further to the brand new Manchester Aquatics centre - where there's a variety of swimming pools and other leisure facilities. The local Platt Fields Park has a boating lake, angling, four bowling greens, football pitch, crazy golf, and tennis courts. It's also home to the historic Platt Hall, Manchester's costume museum, and formal gardens and orchard. The park hosts the annual Manchester garden show in August. Homes on the other side of Fallowfield are not far from Alexandra Park (across Princess Road). The park has tree-lined walks, a lake with fishing as well as sports pitches and courts. There's a local library on Platt lane. See detailed map

The thriving Platt Lane Community Centre has day care, coffee lounge, lunch club, dances and other social events, a youth club, creche and lots more. It's a base for local tenants' associations too.
