Living in Collyhurst South

Collyhurst South is less than a mile from the bars and restaurants of the 'Northern Quarter' on the edge of the city centre. There's a small store on Eastford Square (on the other side of Rochdale Road) and a few shops along Rochdale Road itself. It's about a mile and a half to the new North City Centre complex, and there are some local shops and a small supermarket in neighbouring Miles Platting.

The North City Centre complex has a large Asda store and a variety of smaller shops, an indoor market, and a unique covered outdoor market. There's a post office and medical centre too.

Not only is it the place to come for a whole range of shops, but it also has special Sure Start facilities for families with young children.. There’s a new leisure and fitness centre, with a modern swimming pool, fitness suite and dance studio. A brand new police station is helping build a safe and secure atmosphere. The vibrant new centre will attract investment to the area, and create lots of jobs for local people.

There's good public transport from all parts of the area, with regular buses down Rochdale Road and Oldham Road - the vibrant city centre, with its shops, entertainment and leisure facilities is just a few minutes journey. It's just over a mile to the new Central Manchester Business park (off Monsall Road) - an exciting venture that is boosting the local economy and offering many new jobs and training opportunities. And it's only a mile to the City of Manchester stadium and other sporting and recreational facilities in Eastlands.

It's just a few hundred yards to the nearest indoor leisure centre on Varley Street in neighbouring Miles Platting - it has swimming pools and a fitness room. The Thornton Street estate in neighbouring Collyhurst Monsall has a park at Churnett Street with a kickabout area and multicourts. Harpurhey library is about three-quarters of a mile away on Park View, close to the Queens Road/Rochdale Road junction. There's a thriving community centre on the Livesey Street/Oldham Road junction - look out for the mural by local youngsters.

Collyhurst South is just across Oldham Road from Ancoats - an area about to be transformed. Victorian mills will be cleaned up, renovated and converted into apartments, offices and other uses. There'll be cafes, bars and amenities as people move back to the area. See detailed map
