Brownley Green is about nine miles south of the city centre. It is east of the M56 motorway, between Hollyhedge Road and Simonsway. It’s less than two miles from Manchester airport, and very close to Wythenshawe centre. There's good access to the motorway network, and other areas of south Manchester and Cheshire. Living in Brownley Green
Most homes in Brownley Green are rented from Willow Park Housing Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that took over the housing from the city council in 1999. Willow Park has made improvements to all local homes, the facilities and the environment.
People living in the north and east of the area not far from local shops on Hollyhedge Road, and Wythenshawe health centre on Brownley Road. Most homes in Brownley Green are very close to the recently-improved Wythenshawe civic shopping centre, with its food hall and market. The centre also includes the Wythenshawe Forum, a modern, welcoming, safe and accessible building at the heart of community life; the place to come for leisure, learning and childcare. It includes a swimming pool, gym, sports hall and fitness centre, health centre, children's nursery and job centre. The modern Forum library has all the latest facilities to give local people instant access to employment and learning opportunities.
There are regular buses to the city centre. Public transport would be even better if the Metrolink tram system is extended to nearby the airport.
There is a range of job opportunities at the rapidly-developing international airport, with 250 companies based there. As the airport expands it offers other employment in construction and hotels. The airport is keen to employ more local people as it grows.
Most homes are within walking distance of Hollyhedge park where there are football pitches, a bowling club, nature area and children’s play park. There are summer play sessions and an annual community open day there too. And it’s just a mile and a half to Wythenshawe park - one of the biggest and best in the city! There's a horticultural centre, pets corner, crazy golf, horse riding, bowling greens, pitch and putt, tennis courts an athletics track, football pitches and much more. Homes in the south of the area are close to the park at Kirkup Gardens just over Simonsway; while people in the north are not far from Haveley circle park in nearby Benchill.
The community centre on Benchill Road in neighbouring Benchill is a base for various groups and activities including learning courses, employment advice, an out of school club, and playschemes.
Learning in Brownley Green
It’s just a short walk to Parklands High secondary school next to Wythenshawe civic centre. St Paul’s Catholic school is just over the motorway (by footbridge) in Newall Green. Younger children can go to Haveley Hey primary school on Broadoak Road, or St John Fisher Catholic school on Woodhouse Lane; both schools are in the middle of the area.
