Royal Oak is a small estate in Baguley, about eight miles south of the city centre. It is just south off Altrincham Road, opposite Wythenshawe park. It's close to Princess Parkway - a major route into the city from the M56 and the motorway network. So there's good access to Manchester Airport and other areas of south Manchester and Cheshire. In October 2006 all council homes transferred to a new not-for-profit landlord - Parkway Green Housing Trust. This new company will make massive improvements to every home and to the local environment.
Living in Royal Oak
Royal Oak is right next to the large Tesco supermarket on Altrincham Road, and the Habitat store and post office on Southmoor Road. The civic centre in the middle of Wythenshawe has more shopping, a food hall and a thriving market.
There is good public transport along Altrincham Road - to the city centre, Altrincham and Wythenshawe hospital. An extension of the Metrolink tram system would bring job opportunities, shopping and leisure facilities within easier reach. It will also improve access to the Wythenshawe Forum centre.
The Forum centre is a modern, welcoming, safe and accessible building at the heart of community life - the place to come for leisure, learning and childcare. It has indoor leisure facilities including a swimming pool, gym, sports hall and fitness centre. There's a health centre, children's nursery, and a job centre. The refurbished Forum library has all the very latest facilities to give local people instant access to employment and learning opportunities.
Royal Oak is just across the road from Wythenshawe park - one of the biggest and best in the city! There's a horticultural centre, pets corner, crazy golf, horse riding, bowling greens, pitch and putt, tennis courts an athletics track, football pitches and much more. It hosts the Manchester Show in May, Family Fundays throughout the summer, and an annual firework and bonfire extravaganza. There is a community centre on Hall Lane. See detailed map
