Ardwick is just a mile south of the city centre. The homes are mostly between Hyde Road and Stockport Road (up to Kirkmanshulme Lane in Longsight), with a few others between Plymouth Grove and Upper Brook Street. Stockport Road is a major route from the city centre to south Manchester. Living in Ardwick
Ardwick homes are close to the large Asda Supermarket and other shops at Longsight district centre. Longsight market (open four days a week) is close by too - it's a busy traditional market with a wide range of quality products. There are very frequent buses along Stockport Road into the heart of Manchester, and out to Stockport and Cheshire. The vibrant city centre, with its employment, leisure and entertainment facilities is just a few minutes away. The nearby universities and hospitals are major employers.
Ardwick leisure centre on Stockport Road offers indoor bowling, karate, keep fit and five-a-side football. There are outdoor sports and play facilities at the town park (Grindlow Street), and Swinton park (Plymouth Grove). The Pitz five-a-side outdoor soccer centre is just half a mile away. The Manchester Aquatics centre with its Olympic swimming pool, children's pool and water chutes is only a short distance away, and the Apollo theatre in nearby Chorlton on Medlock hosts regular concerts by major international stars. The local primary schools are Plymouth Grove school (Plymouth Grove West), St Chrysostom's (Lincoln Grove off Plymouth Grove), and St Joseph's Catholic school (Richmond Grove). There are no secondary schools in Ardwick - the nearest one is Cedar Mount (on Matthews Lane on the Levenshulme/Gorton border). The nearest Catholic secondary school is St Peters (Holmecorft Road, Gorton).
